Jan 29, 2025 · Twice Grade 1-placed Ferocious, one of the fastest 2-year-olds of 2024, will make his highly anticipated sophomore debut in Saturday’s Grade 3, $265,000 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park. The 36th running of the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull is the next step on Gulfstream’s road to the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) on March 29.

Holy Bull was that rare horse who could win one-turn races like the Hutcheson Stakes and the Grade 1 Metropolitan Mile as though sprinting were his life’s calling, and also capture a testing 1 ¼-mile race like the prestigious Travers Stakes, holding off no less than the eventual winner of that year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Following the Travers, Holy Bull defeated standouts Devil His Due, Colonial Affair, and Go for Gin in the Woodward Stakes at Belmont to close out his sophomore campaign with five straight wins. Holy Bull won the Eclipse Awards for Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-Old Male.

The Holy Bull Stakes is the first Florida prep race for 3-year-olds on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The race gives points to the top four finishers that will help them earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate.
