Glacial Lake Wisconsin was a prehistoric proglacial lake that existed from approximately 18,000 to 14,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, in the central part of present-day Wisconsin in the United States.

Glacial Lake Wisconsin was a significant feature of the glacial history and landscape of Wisconsin and North America. It was a large lake that formed about 18,000 years ago when a glacier blocked the outlet of the Wisconsin River around the Baraboo Hills.

Glacial Lake Wisconsin formed approximately 18,000 years ago when the Green Bay Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet – the massive glacier that stretched into Wisconsin during an ice age period 30,000 years ago – began to melt. As the lobe retreated, it left behind ridges of rock and sand called moraines.

The Wisconsin glaciation, also called the Wisconsin glacial episode, was the most recent glacial period of the North American ice sheet complex, peaking more than 20,000 years ago.

During the last part of the Wisconsin Glaciation, central Wisconsin was occupied by a proglacial lake called Lake Wisconsin. Lake Wisconsin formed when the Green Bay Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet reached the Baraboo Hills in south-central Wisconsin, damming the lowland to the north, which is now occupied by the south-flowing Wiscon-sin River.

About 15,000 years ago these bluffs became islands in a great body of water called Glacial Lake Wisconsin. Shorter bluffs like Ragged Rock were sometimes totally submerged under icy waters more than 80 feet deep.

Adams County, in central Wisconsin, is underlain by Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rock, Cambrian sand and sandstone, and a variety of generally sandy Pleistocene materials. The western part of the county was submerged in glacial Lake.
