In the days leading up to a proposed US government ban on the social media platform TikTok, American users have turned to another Chinese-owned app, Xiaohongshu or popularly referred to as RedNote. The United States passed a law last year forcing the popular video platform’s owner ByteDance to either sell it or shut it down by January 19.

This looming TikTok ban has over 170 million US TikTok users (who have named themselves "TikTok Refugees") scrambling for a replacement app. And that's what these users have seemingly found in Xiaohongshu or RedNote — a Chinese-owned social media app that has already risen to #1 on the US App Store.
