A total of 130 suspected patients and 2 suspected deaths of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) have been found in Maharashtra so far, the fresh data released by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme Public Health Department in Pune on the ongoing outbreak in the state's several pockets showed.

The total number of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra has risen to 127, with 72 confirmed cases, the state’s Public Health Department announced on Wednesday (29 January), as reported by ANI.

"The patient, suffering from symptoms like breathlessness, weakness in lower limbs, and diarrhoea, was admitted to a private hospital (in Solapur) on January 18 as he was on ventilator support on and off.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is rare, but most cases follow an infection with a virus or bacteria. GBS affects the nerves that control muscle movement and impacts immune system.

According to the latest report, a man suspected to have contracted the condition has died in Maharashtra's Solapur district and had a travel history in Pune, said the health officials in a news agency.

Around 59 people have been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in India's Pune on Thursday (Jan 23). Around 12 out of the 59 people are on ventilators due to the rare neurological disorder.
