City council voted to advance work on the province's proposal for the long-embattled transit line, but how the two sides still disagree on what the downtown portion of the track will look like.

The City of Calgary is moving forward with a multi-billion-dollar transit project that was the centre of a months-long battle with the Alberta government.

Calgary city council voted Tuesday to move ahead with the contentious $6.3-billion project . The agreed strategy — still to be signed off by the provincial and federal governments — would see the line built from a grand central station in Victoria Park to Shepard in the city’s southeast while the alignment of an elevated track through downtown would be studied for the next two years.

Calgary City Council voted yes today on the Green Line LRT, getting shovels in the ground this year in the southeast and beginning work immediately on the connection into the downtown. This decision reflects months of work with the Province of Alberta on a path forward for the largest infrastructure investment in Calgary’s history.

With expressions of anger over the province’s role in the Green Line plan, a divided city council reluctantly voted Tuesday to move ahead with the project.
