Daniel Kaluuya is teaming up with Mattel Films to produce a big-screen live-action film starring our favorite purple dinosaur, Barney.

A24 is also on board as a producer, alongside Kaluuya and Rowan Riley for 59% Productions. First announced in 2019, the film has been described as a surrealistic take on the iconic purple dinosaur, targeting millennials rather than children.

Momentum is gaining on A24’s live-action Barney movie from Mattel Films and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions, as the companies have set Emmy and Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri to write the screenplay and also have her in talks to star.

Ayo Edebiri is set to write and is in talks to star in the Barney movie at A24. The project has been in development since 2019 when it was annoucned that Mattel Films and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions would be partnering with the studio on the project about the beloved childhood TV character.

Edebiri’s name isn’t the only big one attached to the upcoming project, with Daniel Kaluuya set to back the title under his 59% banner alongside Rowan Riley. As one could expect, Mattel Films also has their hands busy working on the production,
